]]> In Barcelona, where we are, Sant Jordi represents the great fraternal tradition of harmony and trust between us all.
Sant Jordi (Saint George) is the patron saint of Catalonia, whose feast day is celebrated on 23 April. According to legend, Saint George saved his princess by slaying the dragon, whose blood sprouted a rosebush. This is why some consider it to be the Catalan Saint Valentine’s Day, because Saint George is said to be the patron saint of lovers in Catalonia.
We have been in Barcelona since 1899 and Sant Jordi or Saint George’s Day is much more than just a festival: every year, the streets with the city’s characteristic and exclusive hydraulic cement paving, the “panots”, are full of people strolling along with books and roses wrapped in ribbons in the colours of the Catalan flag (La Senyera).
For Sant Jordi it is common to find books in all the languages spoken in Catalonia, as well as predominantly red roses, making it a day of fraternity and harmony between us all.
